I arrived at Massey University fresh out of high school and ready to throw off the restraints of parental concern, curfews and Catholic education. I quickly settled into student life and began exercising my new found freedom by indulging my epicurean appetite. It would be a vast understatement to say that throughout my studies God was far from my mind.
At the end of my undergraduate degree I met a girl....Yes she was (and still is) very beautiful, intelligent, and as it just so happened, a Christian. This particular aspect complicated our relationship, to put it mildly, especially when she made it clear that there could be no future for us because I was not of the same religious persuasion.
I was distraught, though at the same time I felt a deep respect and attraction to the firmness of her convictions. She was willing to deny her feelings, to strive for what she believed to be true and right. I admired her continued resolve to look outwards and towards something higher than her own self-serving desires. This was a noble quality, and one which I rarely displayed.
Intrigued by her response, I started investigating the truth claims of Christianity. I had many questions that needed answers. Does God exist? Did the resurrection really occur? Has the Bible been changed through history? Is there reasonable evidence to support these claims or is it just an irrational leap of faith?
To my surprise I found reasonable and compelling evidence to support the claims of Christianity. Lines of evidence from science, history and philosophy converged; funnelling me through the narrow corridor of truth to the realisation that God existed and has sought to reconcile us to himself through Jesus Christ.
After a year-long investigation I was convinced and committed my life to Jesus Christ. I placed my trust in Jesus and continue to do so not because Christianity appeals to my subjective tastes but because the strength of the objective evidence leads me to believe it is true.
The Christian faith has helped me to see that there is more to life than personal happiness and the pursuit of pleasure. There exists real meaning and purpose in life because God has created us to be in relationship with Him. Jesus gives freedom to enter into this relationship and receive the joy of living life to the full.
Everyone has a rational obligation to seek the truth. I challenge you to test the truth claims of Christianity for yourself. Perform your own investigation and weigh the evidence objectively.
I wish you well on your journey towards truth.
