Plane rides are interesting–they provide you with opportunities to meet people you would normally never mingle with. I had such an opportunity recently when I was seated next to a New Zealand Government Minister. We got talking and one thing he said to me was: “I am one of those politicians that many may consider almost made it, but didn’t quite do so”. His political career had started 20 years previously when he was a teacher feeling disgruntled with the education system and wanting to make a real change to the world. After his first term in Parliament, he lost his seat and he spent over 10 years ‘defeated’. Now, after 20 years in politics, and several years as a Minister of a low profile, he was reconsidering how he could now make a change to the world. He wanted his life to count for something.
